RAD (Remote Audio Devices)

CAT 5e

The entire family of RAD models interface with either the HAL Multiprocessors or Mongoose for digital conversion at the wall. Each converts analog audio to or from 24-bit, 48 kHz digital audio. Shielded CAT 5e (or better) cable and termination transport four digital audio channels – two channels each direction – as well as power, ground and a communications channel, with status indicators at each RAD, HAL, EXP or Mongoose unit, and Halogen or Tracker software. HAL auto-checks the CAT 5 crimp and verifies audio. All are hot-swappable with 150-meter (500-foot) homerun connections (66% farther than Ethernet). Light sensors dim the RAD indicators in dark rooms. Except for the RAD16(z), AM1, AM2, and PAGER1, all RADs mount in standard US electrical gang boxes. Most RADs are available in white, ivory, or black, with a matched Decora™ plate cover included.

AM1 - Four-Channel Gain-Sharing Automixer & Line Mixer

An AM1 is a RAD, and an AM2 is a RAD, and the final output of cascaded AM mixers is a RAD. Any of these allow the manually created mono mix to be sent digitally to a Rane HAL’s RAD port via a shielded CAT 5e cable (or better). The Rane RADX supports doing so portably – with the AM mixer(s) in a padded rack or on a portable AV cart, for example. Once the AM mix is in the HAL, additional signal processing such as EQ and compression can be added.

The AM1 does not have a Cascade Out Port, therefore it is not possible to cascade the AM1 mix into Halogen’s Gain-Sharing Auto Mixer or Room Combine Processor. You must use the AM2 mixer for cascading with these DSP blocks.

AM1 back

AM2 - Eight-Channel Gain-Sharing Cascadable Automixer

The AM2 mixer digitally cascades into Halogen’s Gain-Sharing Auto Mixer or Room Combine Processor. This means the gain-sharing algorithm automatically treats AM2 microphones and any other microphone wired into these DSP blocks as being part of the same gain-share. This provides superior gain before feedback since all mics in the room, regardless of where and how they are plugged in to the audio system, all work as one. This maintains your feedback stability margin.

To maintain PAG & NAG like you never have before, connect the AM2’s Cascade Out jack with a shielded CAT 5e (or better) cable into any HAL’s RAD port. In Halogen software, in the Processing Workspace, drag the AM2 onto the Cascade In on either a Gain-Sharing Auto Mixer or a Room Combine Processor.
You can cascade as many AM2 mixers into these two DSP blocks as you have RAD Ports available. With a maximum of 260 total RAD ports in a HAL1x full with 32 EXP1x Expanders, and a maximum of 8 AM2s cascaded, over two thousand channels are possible!

RAD16z - Dual Mic-Line-Plus Inputs / Dual Line Outputs / Dual Logic Inputs and Outputs with Euroblocks

A RAD16z is an alternative to standard switchboxes for impractical areas such as in stage floor pockets or above ceilings. Its form factor is a rugged metal box with flexible surface mounting options. The RAD16z is plenum-rated UL 2043.

It contains two balanced Mic / Line / Line-Plus inputs and two balanced line outputs on Euroblock connectors. Line-Plus allows a stereo unbalanced source to connect to a single balanced input and be mono’ed. Inputs are individually software switchable to Mic, Line or Line-Plus. 24 V phantom power can be enabled in software for a condenser mic.

Two Logic Inputs and Outputs interface other devices to HAL with toggles or commands, like push-to-talk or mute switches, projectors, lights, alarms, etc. Logic In connects a device contact switch between pin 1 or 2 to ground. Logic Out is 5 V high or 0 V low.

Galvanic isolation prevents current flow between the RAD and host technical grounds from interfering with audio. The RAD16z is only available in black. Mountable to any flat surface, it measures 4.92" x 3.31" x 1.05" (12.5 x 8.4 x 2.7 cm).

RAD26 One Room RAD Remote

What can you do with a single shielded category cable?

Rane’s new RAD26 provides enough I/O and control to support one room in a HAL audio system that requires these features:

  • Local audio line input (smartphone, laptop, MP3, DVD)
  • One or two microphone or line-level inputs
  • Amplifier outputs for speakers
  • Level control
  • Source selection

Using one shielded category cable drop, the RAD26 provides any room with a dual 4-watt amp, end-user control via a customizable color display, a dual universal audio I/O interface, plus headphone output and line-level input jacks for local needs. Three logic inputs and three active-low outputs add to control capabilities. The amp permits a single channel option of 8 watts into 8 ohms. Applications include:

  • Classroom inputs for teacher’s mic and local inputs.
  • Presentation source and volume with projector and screen control.
  • Meeting room with A/V teleconferencing and speakers.
  • Spa with BGM, local music input and stereo ceiling speakers.
  • Hotel or cruise ship room TV and local input sound system.

Since the RAD26 is connected to a HAL system, each room can select local or system sources, and permits normal, priority or emergency paging.

RAD26

The RAD26 ships the end of December 2015 along with the upcoming and required Halogen 6.1 software.

RADX - RAD Port Extension (CAT 5 jack)

Think of the RADX as an extension cord. The port to which the RADX is connected needs to be configured for a specific kind of RAD – and you can only plug in that type of RAD. People might choose the RADX approach over buying all the specific RADs because of the cost. A RADX is much cheaper than an actual RAD. Therefore, just buying one set of RADs and moving them around on an A/V cart is cheaper, when you know the RADs will only be used one place at a time. The RADX has a microphone type jack in it – to help the audio guy distinguish between the RADX and a standard CAT 5 data connection in the wall.
The RADX mounts in a standard 1-gang US electrical box. It is available in white, ivory, or black, with a matched Decora™ plate cover included. Order model RADXW for white, RADXI for ivory, and RADXB for black.

RADXRADX back

Important Note: The Neutrik EtherCON jack on the RADX is compatible with Neutrik's NE8MC and any standard RJ-45 plug. While EtherCON connectors accept CAT6 and CAT6A cabling, they do not work and are incompatible with all CAT6 plug and jack families. Use only CAT 5e compatible RJ-45 ends. If your RJ-45 says any form of CAT 6, or CAT6A, or CAT6^A, or CAT6A-ISO, or CAT 6 A-EIA – it is not compatible with the RADX or EtherCON.

RAD17 Omnidirectional Microphone

A RAD17 provides a single audio input from a built-in omnidirectional boundary layer / PZM pressure zone electret microphone. It handles extreme temperatures and humidity for indoor or outdoor applications. It may be used for ambient noise sensing, surveillance, security, train stations, etc.
The rear of the RAD17 includes status LEDs to ensure connectivity.
The RAD17 mounts in a standard 1-gang US electrical box. It is only available in black, though the metal grille may be spray painted to match surroundings. A black Decora™ plate cover is included.

RAD27 - USB Audio Interface

A RAD27 provides stereo USB Audio in and out of a single computer. Perfectly suited for presentation, meeting and class rooms, simultaneous playback and recording is supported. Since the RAD27 uses native operating system drivers, no driver installation is required on either Windows® or Apple OS X®. Plug in the USB cable, select the RAD27 for sound playback and/or recording and go. To maintain backward compatibility with legacy operating systems, all RAD27 USB audio is 16-bit, while the RAD converters and all HAL and Mongoose audio maintains 24-bit resolution. The sample rate is always 48 kHz.

Input/Play and Output/Record signal present and overload indicators provide handy “is the computer sending USB audio?” troubleshooting assistance at the wall plate. A dedicated blue Connected indicator illuminates when the computer OS recognizes the RAD27 as a sound card. When used with any HAL, the Connected indicator is readable and programmable in the Halogen software. This permits actions in your HAL system once the USB Audio cable is plugged in, such as lowering a screen and turning on the projector via Ethernet control commands or contact closures.

The RAD27 ships with a robust USB cable and a screw-down cable tie. When mounting the RAD27 out of sight from the computer location, securing the USB Audio cable helps deter presenters from stealing the USB cable after each RAD27 use.

Dual Mic-Line-Plus Inputs / Dual Line Outputs / Dual Logic Inputs and Outputs with Euroblocks

Ambient Noise Compensation Block

Ambient Noise Compensation

Halogen’s ANC block combined with the RAD17 (or any) omnidirectional microphone allows the crowd noise to control the background music and paging volume. Background music and paging should only be loud enough to be heard — not blasting in the morning, or too quiet at night. As the crowd gets louder, music and paging gets louder. Less customer complaints about sound, faster service at the shoe counter.

RAD27 - USB Audio Interface

This product has been discontinued

RADX - RAD Port Extension (CAT 5 jack)

This product has been discontinued

AM1 - Four-Channel Gain-Sharing Automixer & Line Mixer

An AM1 allows the manually created mono mix to be sent digitally to a Rane HAL’s RAD port via a shielded CAT 5e cable (or better).

AM2 front

AM2 back

PAGER1 Station

PAGER1 with mic

PAGER1 Paging Station

This RAD is a mic preamp with a paging zone(s) [Scenario] selector with integrated push-to-talk switch. Busy, Caution and Ready indicators inform end users when priorities clash. It accepts any standard gooseneck mic (not included) and has built-in selectable 24 V Phantom Power and a 13 dB pad. It normally sits on a desk or table, and has lockdown features for security.

Setting up paging in Halogen Software is as easy as adding zones to groups (called Scenarios), and then specifying the Scenarios into which each paging station can page into. The paging hardware (the Pager1 RAD) then displays the Scenario options available at that station. The user selects the desired Scenario, waits for the Ready green light indicating that all zones in that Scenario are ready to hear a message, presses the talk button, and speaks into the microphone. The Pager1 includes these paging controls:

  • A selectable list of available Paging Scenarios.
  • A talk button
  • Mic Signal and Overload LEDs
  • Indicators for Busy, Caution, and Ready (referring to the selected Scenario).
  • The Busy indicator lights when zones in the selected scenario are in use by a higher or same priority page.
  • The Caution indicator lights when zones in the selected scenario are in use by a lower priority page.
  • The Ready indicator lights when all zones in the scenario are free to page into.

RAD front panel description

1 Label – a location on the RAD for inserting a custom label of the input, output or channel number associated with the corresponding jack.

2 XLR tab – push tab for releasing a microphone cable. This tab may be removed – details are in the HAL or Mongoose installation manual.

3 Input/Output jacks – the actual jacks to which you connect the appropriate audio device(s). The jacks differ based on the RAD model.

4 SIG/OL LED – displays a green light when an audio signal is detected, displays a red light when the channel is experiencing a signal overload.

5 Power LED – displays solid green when the RAD is receiving power, turns solid red if the voltage received is lower that expected.

6 Comm LED – displays solid green when the RAD detects the communication pair of wires and communication is established between the HAL or Mongoose and the RAD. The LED displays solid red if the RAD cannot communicate with the host, likely due to a communication pair wiring problem.

7 Audio Rx LED – displays solid green when the RAD detects that the pair of wires for receiving audio is functioning properly, regardless of the RAD model, displays red if there is a problem.

8 Audio Tx LED – displays solid green if communication with the HAL or Mongoose has been established and the host informs the RAD of the Tx Audio lock. The light displays solid red if there is a problem communicating with the RAD or if there is a problem with the Audio Tx pair of wires.

9 Light sensor – detects the amount of light in the room and dims or brightens all LEDs appropriately. If the room where the RAD is installed is very dark and the “Allow LEDs to turn off” option is enabled, the LEDs will go completely dark. If this is the case and you need to see the lights, simply shine a light (from a flashlight or some other source) on the RAD. Note that you cannot permanently turn these lights off manually, this is by design. We want to avoid the possibility of anyone thinking the RAD is defective (because the power light is off) and attempting to replace it unnecessarily.

Locate mode (all four flashing green) – Halogen and Mongoose Tracker have a feature to verify the physical location of a specific RAD, DR, HAL, EXP or Mongoose. When a RAD is placed in Locate mode, the Power, Comm, Audio Tx, and Audio Rx LEDs on the front of the corresponding RAD flash green. Flashing continues until you cancel the request in the software, place another RAD in Locate mode, interrupt the connection between the computer and host, disconnect the RAD, or power cycle the host.

Mismatch mode (all four flashing red) – When a RAD is connected to a RAD port on the back of a HAL, EXP or Mongoose a comparison is made between the physical RAD model and the RAD model specified for this port in the HAL or Mongoose’s configuration. If there is a mismatch the Power, Comm, Audio Tx, and Audio Rx LEDs on the front of the corresponding RAD flash red.
