RaneWare

RW RaneWare (4M) version 2.3 is only compatible with Windows 95, 98 (or XP with a Keyspan USB Serial Adapter*). RaneWare allows up to sixteen RW 232 units at a time to be programmed and controlled in real time. The software has easy-to-use graphic control surfaces, customized for each unit. The lineup of RW 232 controlled units supported includes the RPE 228d 2-channel 28-band equalizer, the RPM 26v and RPM 26i Multiprocessors, the Engineered Conference Systems conferencing line of products, the Via 10 Ethernet bridge and the RPD 1 Programming and Diagnostics Unit usable with any of the above. Manuals for all these products are found here. RaneWare controls each device using Rane's RW 232 protocol - fully compatible with industry standard RS-232.
Note: RaneWare is a 16-bit program written to run on Windows 95, 98SE and earlier OS's like Windows 3.1, though in some instances will not work on Windows NT, and most instances 2000 and ME are inconsistent. The crashing is caused by the WOW32.DLL in later OS versions not being compatible with RaneWare and other file issues. Officially we support only the Windows 98SE and earlier operating systems. The solution is to run Windows 95 or 98SE, however XP will work with a Keyspan USB Serial Adapter. Other OS's might work but we can't guarantee or support all the variables.

Windows NT 4.0 seems fine, but you cannot print consistently with version 2.3. RaneWare version 2.2 does seem to print correctly under NT 4.0.

RaneWare does not work in any modes under Windows 2000. It "crashes and burns" if not immediately after startup, then soon after. WOW32.DLL is the most common problem witnessed under Windows 2000.

Under Windows ME, it seems "OK" in offline mode and fairly inconsistent in online (i.e. hardware connected) mode.

Windows XP with the Tripp-Lite Keyspan USB Serial Adapter. Rane did testing of Raneware on Windows XP using several different USB Serial Adapters. On most, the results were dismal at best, however we do have one winner. The Keyspan USB Serial Adapter P/N: USA-19HS has worked without problem under all tests of Raneware on Windows XP. Its been tried on a Dell and generic desktop as well as laptops from Sony, Dell, and Compaq. It ran 24 hours on the generic desktop without any failures.

You do not need to reinstall Raneware to use the new USB adapter. To use the Keyspan adapter with Raneware do the following:

1) Insert the Keyspan supplied CDROM and install the Keyspan USB Adapter Software.

2) Plug in the Keyspan adapter to an available USB Port. The USB adapter will be automatically detected by Windows XP.

3) Verify that the COM Port assignment for the USB adapter is between COM 1 and COM 4 (Raneware only supports COM Ports 1-4). To Verify:

  • a. Start the "Computer Management". This application is located under "Administrative Tools" found in the Control Panel.
  • b. Select "Device Manager" from the tree at the left of the application.
  • c. Select "Ports (COM & LPT)" from the tree on the right side of the application. Under "Ports" select "Keyspan USB Serial Port (COM#)". Look at the number in the '#' position. This will be the COM Port number automatically assigned by Windows XP. If this number is 5 or greater it will have to be changed to fall within 1 and 4. If it needs to be changed continue with step d) otherwise move on to step 4.
  • d. Select "Properties" under the main "Action" menu.
  • e. Click on the "Port Settings" tab and then click the "Start Assistant" button.
  • f. Now click the "Port Mapping" tab.
  • g. In the combo box at the right of "COM port mapping for selected adapter port:" select an available COM port in the range of 1 to 4. Answer yes to the confirmation dialog.
  • h. Close out all the dialogs by clicking OK and you are done.

4) Launch Raneware and select "System Setup" under the main "System" menu. In this dialog select the appropriate COM Port (Discovered/Set in #3 above) and Select RS-232 in the Connection group box. Click OK.

5) Launch Raneware and select "Select" under the main "Device" menu. Click the Poll button. The connected device will appear in the list. Select it and click OK.

6) The connected device will be loaded and you are ready to go!

RW ECM 64 Firmware update rev. 1.5 adds flash hook, caller on hold capabilities, and bug fixes. It is only for the ECM 64, not the ECM 64e.

RW ECM 64e Firmware update rev. 2.4 is for the ECM 64e, not the ECM 64.
Make certain that the ECM 64e Hardware Rev is 2.0 and Firmware Rev is less than 2.2. To view the current Hardware and Firmware Rev, run the RaneWare program and select Device Status from the Device pull-down menu. To update ECM 64e firmware, download this file to your RW232 directory. Run RaneWare and make a backup file of the ECM 64e memories by selecting Backup Memories to File. Once you have made a backup file, upload the firmware file to the ECM 64e by selecting Update Firmware from the Device pull-down menu. While the firmware is uploading, the COM and -6 LEDs continually flash. Once the firmware has finished, the ECM 64e resets and reloads its default memory values. Use the Restore Memories from File and Restore Names from File to retrieve your old settings. View Device Status to verify that the Firmware Rev is 2.4.

RW ECM 82e Firmware update rev. 3.3 is for the ECM 64e, not the ECM 64.

RaneWare FAQ

Whenever I open a window on a window the program crashes. What's happening?

Does RaneWare run under Windows Vista?

RaneWare is a 16-bit program written to run on Windows 95, 98SE and earlier OS's like Windows 3.1, 3.11, NT 3.5x and 4.x. Windows 2000 will not support RaneWare. Windows ME is reported to work, but is not officially supported. Windows XP can work, but only with the use of a specific third-party USB to serial adapter, manufactured by Keyspan, (see it here). Windows Vista has not been tested and no plans exist to recompile RaneWare for compatibility with it. Officially we support only the Windows 98SE and earlier operating systems. The only solution is to run the earlier version: Windows 95 or 98SE.

Under Windows XP, offline mode seems "OK" but online mode is anybody's guess. It varies wildly depending on if it's a desktop versus laptop machine and also what type of ports are on the unit. Machines sporting USB ports running XP are far more likely to experience issues when polling for our hardware.

How many conductors are required to interconnect units to the COM port on the computer?

The RS 232 cable for the unit uses two conductors and a shield. Pins two and three are the data with pin five being the shield.

I lost the password for the RaneWare. Now what do I do?

There is a file that contains the information which will have to be deleted. Once it's gone all the Site Control Panel names will be lost. This file name can be obtained by contacting us by fax, phone or email. [We won't post the name here just in case someone has a warped sense of humor.]

I'm running RaneWare in Windows 95/98 and got stuck in the Site Control Panel. How do I get out of it?

Right mouse click on the Title Bar (the top of the window where it says Site Control Panel) and select Device Edit. You will then need to enter the password, (stock is "please".) In case your mouse isn't working you can get to the Device Edit option by pressing Alt. and the Spacebar together. This will give the drop-down options of: Device Edit or Exit.

What version of RaneWare is on the CD shipped with the unit?
